The Evolution of Euphoria: A Deep Dive into the History of Anjunadeep

Anjunadeep is a premier independent electronic music record label that fundamentally shaped the landscape of modern deep house, melodic house, and organic house music. I started my blog to celebrate the intricate, soulful rhythms that move both the dancefloor and the mind, and no imprint embodies this ethos quite like Anjunadeep. Founded in London in 2005, the label grew from a niche outlet for transitional club tracks into a global community with over 600 releases and a fiercely loyal international following.

In this comprehensive exploration, I take you through the definitive history of the label, introduce you to the masterminds behind its curation, break down its sister imprints, spotlight the iconic artists who define its catalog, and track the journey of its global event brands.

└──> Purpose: To release deeper, hypnotic, lower-BPM records
To understand how I fell in love with the signature sound of Anjunadeep, we must go back to the year 2000. The electronic music landscape was dominated by high-energy sounds. Trance music was reaching its global peak, and the legendary trio Above & Beyond (Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki) had just established their flagship label, Anjunabeats.
By 2005, Above & Beyond and their long-time manager James Grant noticed a shift in their own musical tastes and club sets. During the late hours and early mornings, their track selections slowed down, moving away from euphoric trance toward a hypnotic, progressive, and atmospheric soundscape. They needed a dedicated home for these lower-BPM records that did not fit the energetic criteria of the main label.

Thus, in 2005, they launched Anjunadeep. In its earliest days, the label focused heavily on a fusion of tech-house, minimal progressive, and deep trance. Early vinyl pressings featured pioneering acts like Jaytech, Michael Cassette, and Paul Keeley. The defining turning point came in 2009 with the release of Anjunadeep 01, the very first installment of their flagship annual compilation series. This compilation solidified the imprint as a tastemaker label, proving it was not just a side-project, but a structural movement in electronic music.

The Visionaries: Meeting the Founders and A&R Minds

The phenomenal rise of the label is directly tied to the creative direction of its founders and key A&R (Artist & Repertoire) figures.
Above & Beyond
While Jono, Tony, and Paavo remain the iconic faces of the overarching Anjuna umbrella, their foundational role in creating Anjunadeep provided the baseline infrastructure and industry leverage needed to launch an independent label. Their ear for emotional chord progressions and beautiful melodies directly carried over into the deep house realm.
James Grant
As the co-founder and central A&R driver of Anjunadeep, James Grant is the true curator-in-chief of the label's aesthetic. James has a meticulous ear for discovery. He is responsible for personally unearthing some of the biggest names in modern melodic house. His seamless mixing style on the annual compilation albums sets the benchmark for the entire genre.
Jody Wisternoff
In 2012, veteran Bristol-based producer Jody Wisternoff (one-half of the legendary electronic duo Way Out West) officially stepped into a co-curator and A&R role alongside James Grant. Jody brought decades of underground club experience, rave history, and a distinctively gritty, breakbeat-influenced house sensibility to the team. Together, the James & Jody partnership became the definitive creative engine of the label, turning their annual mixed compilations into highly anticipated musical diaries.

Reflections

Launched in May 2022, Reflections was born out of the realization that fans needed music for the "moments in between the dancefloors". It focuses completely on ambient soundscapes, beautiful cinematic pieces, and downtempo rhythms perfect for relaxation and introspection.

Anjunadeep Explorations

Originally a successful various-artists EP series designed to test new talent, Anjunadeep Explorations officially graduated into a standalone fourth imprint in July 2024. Managed by Label Director Dom Donnelly, this imprint acts as a rapid, cutting-edge talent incubator focusing on raw underground club textures, organic house, and breakbeat variations.

Iconography of Sound: Famous Artists of the Roster

The true legacy of Anjunadeep lies in its unparalleled ability to scout raw, unknown bedroom producers and build them into international headliners. I want to highlight the most influential figures who have written chapters in the label's history book:
  • Lane 8 (Daniel Goldstein): He found his musical breakout on the label in the early 2010s. His debut album Rise (2015) remains a gold standard for melodic house, blending indie-vocal sensibilities with pristine electronic production.
  • Ben Böhmer: Discovered through the Explorations EP series, the German live-act producer went on to release his monumental albums Breathing (2019) and Begin Again (2021) on the label. His Cercle live streams using Anjunadeep discography remain cultural touchstones for millions of viewers.
  • Yotto (Otto Yliperttula): Bringing a darker, punchier, and more energetic edge to the catalog, the Finnish superstar released iconic anthems like "Fire Walk" and his debut LP Hyperfall via the imprint.
  • Dusky: The duo of Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman helped redefine the label’s sound profile during the 2011–2013 deep house revival with their critically acclaimed album Stick By This.
  • Marsh (Tom Marshall): Tom’s signature combination of atmospheric 90s progressive house revivalism and modern engineering has made him one of the most beloved contemporary figures on the roster.
  • Eli & Fur: The UK duo has consistently delivered sultry, vocal-led deep tech classics such as "Night Blooming Jasmine" and their stunning studio album Found In The Wild.
  • Tinlicker: The Dutch powerhouse duo injected complex progressive arrangements and massive club energy into the roster, highlighted by their breathtaking album In Another Lifetime.

A Global Community: The History of Anjunadeep Events

Anjunadeep did not achieve its legendary status solely through digital downloads and streaming playlists. They built a tangible, real-world global family by curating events that prioritize crowd safety, welcoming atmospheres, and pristine acoustic design.

The Early Club Showcases

In the late 2000s, label parties were intimate affairs, often hosted in the secondary rooms of major venues like Ministry of Sound in London or during conference weeks in Miami and Amsterdam. These small rooms allowed artists to experiment with extended 4-hour sets, testing the boundaries of the deep house genre.
The "Open Air" Phenomenon
As the melodic house sound surged into the global mainstream, the label introduced its proprietary event brand: Anjunadeep Open Air. These events transitioned the music out of dark, smoky clubs and into beautiful daytime, outdoor urban locations.
The brand began regularly selling out legendary venues across five continents. Iconic locations include:
  • The Brooklyn Mirage in New York City, creating an immersive playground of towering LED walls.
  • Printworks London, where the industrial, metallic halls contrasted beautifully with the warm, emotional melodies of the label artists.
  • Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, where the label made history by completely selling out the monumental natural sandstone amphitheater, proving that deep house belongs on the grandest stages.

Anjunadeep Explorations (Albania)

The absolute pinnacle of the label's event curation is its multi-day boutique destination festival, Anjunadeep Explorations, held annually along the stunning coastal beaches of Dhërmi, Albania. This festival brings together thousands of dedicated fans from all over the world for a week of wellness, intimate beach parties, and unique castle-side raves. It removes the barrier between artist and fan, creating a pure community experience that represents the true spirit of the label.

Why Anjunadeep Matters to Organic and Deep House Lovers

For those of us running curators' spaces in the organic house, progressive house, and deep electronic realms, Anjunadeep serves as a primary blueprint. They masterfully demonstrate how to protect the artistic integrity of underground music while scaling a brand into a worldwide powerhouse. They treat dance music not as a disposable commodity, but as a lifelong, emotional companion.

Nearly twenty years since its inception, the label remains just as dedicated to uncovering the future of soulful electronic music as it was on day one. Whether you are a bedroom producer trying to get signed to their new Explorations imprint or a fan traveling across the world to dance on a beach in Albania, you are part of a timeless musical movement.
