A Blog About A New Blogging Journey

Why Start A Blog?

A tricky question for me to answer here. This really started as a stereotypical experiment of mine. I’ve been known to do this kind of thing before. Come up with crazy badly thought out schemes and charge straight into it without much thought. It’s a trait of my recently diagnosed ADHD (a whole other story), however this time I’m trying to stick this one out, mainly because I'm really enjoying it and because I’m hyperfocusing on it too.

Why A Blog About DJing and Audio?

I’ve had a passion for music since my youth in the early 80s, I started DJing in the 90s after my older brother got himself some Technics SL1200s and I followed suit with some Vestax PDT5000s.  I’ve also always been a technology nerd for as long as I can remember. These three things, music, DJing and tech all naturally fall together. They are all connected and linked. For that reason I’ve decided to try to put together somewhere your average ‘Joe’ (or ‘Nicola’ for that matter) can find simple information on all these three topics in one place.

Over the years I’ve found my passion for music has evolved. It’s been shaped by technology and changes to how I can access music and how I can present it. I’ve been fascinated by the evolution of DJing and DJing equipment, audio and hifi, the internet and the new connected world. I religiously watch technology videos on YouTube, I have music on constantly in the house and when I’m on the move, and I’m fascinated by audio and how good quality audio is becoming more accessible for less to the average consumer.

Since hearing high quality hifi and to some extent helping my older brother spend his money on his stunning, hi end hifi system I’ve become amazed at how good quality hifi is available with little outlay. Once I heard audio how it was meant to have been presented, I struggled to go back.

I’ve also been DJing in one form or other since the early 1990s. From mixing with Vinyl to CDs and most recently digital and streaming I’ve followed the evolution of DJ technology. I’ve loved how it’s become more accessible, more affordable and more creative over the years. I’ve also loved how easy it’s become to create DJ mixes and then to share them with friends and wider communities. As all this technology has developed, it has to be said that figuring it all out has become quite a minefield.

What’s The Motivation To Create This Blog?

What started out as curiosity has become much more. I think I've spotted a small niche gap on the internet and out of curiosity decided to see if I could fill it. As I’ve spent more and more time putting articles together and working out where this is headed the more I’ve realised this is a great, positive way to fill my spare time.

During this process it’s also hit me that for someone who might be just entering this world I can imagine it must be daunting. My idea of putting simple, concise information in one place will hopefully make it more accessible. The idea is that if someone wants to find information on a product, a service or a way of completing a task connected to audio, DJing or DJing tech they will either find that information on the blog, or the blog will point them in the right direction of exactly where to find it. It shouldn’t matter if someone is a seasoned DJ looking for something specific or a beginner looking for ideas on where to start. The info should be there, and easily accessible. Simple.

What Will Be The Key Features In The Blog?

The idea is to split the blog into fundamentally three main areas:

  • Music - content about music old and new, artists, record labels and events

  • DJing and DJ Tech - content about DJing, music formats and DJing technology

  • Audio and HiFi - content about audio, how best to present it and products to enhance your experience with it

There will be subcategories that I create however the basic content on the blog will be covered by the three main areas above.

Can I Contribute To The Blog?

Yes of course! This content is ever developing. Articles will be updated and amended, new content will be added and readers views and thoughts are always welcome.

If anyone has further ideas and thoughts on other content that needs to featured please do get in touch at dangerousdougal@gmail.com

DJing has come a long way since the days of vinyl records and turntables. One of the most exciting developments in recent years is the rise of motorised jog wheels on DJ controllers. With the recent release of the Rane Performer the talk of motorised jog wheels has never been more prevalent. If you're a DJ or aspiring to become one, understanding this technology could be a game-changer for your performances.  What Are Motorised Jog Wheels? At its core, a jog wheel is a circular interface on a DJ controller used to manipulate the playback of music tracks. Traditionally, jog wheels are non-motorised, meaning they don't spin on their own. However, motorised jog wheels are different—they mimic the feel of a turntable platter by spinning like a vinyl record, offering a more authentic scratc...
