During my time using Mixcloud the site has evolved quite substantially. I came originally from Soundcloud where by I had put a lot of time and effort into creating my original page. Following a number of frustrating copyright strikes on Soundcloud I made the decision to ditch my Soundcloud page and make the move. 


Was it worth it? Yes. For my regular followers I’ve found I’ve been able to upload more content with minimum fuss. The account is much easier to set up and maintain and has become much easier to promote with its more recent added functionality. 


So, in this article I’m going to give you a more detailed overview of what Mixcloud is and why I’m using it solely for uploading my mixes as well as a simple step-by-step guide on how to get started on the platform and create a successful page to host your DJ mixes.


An Introduction to Mixcloud


So it's time to introduce you to Mixcloud and explain what makes it a unique platform for DJs like me as well as music producers.


So what is Mixcloud?


Mixcloud is an online music streaming platform that specialises in DJ mixes, radio shows, and podcasts. Unlike other streaming platforms, Mixcloud focuses on long-form audio content, making it an ideal platform for DJs and radio hosts who want to share their mixes and shows with a wider audience.


And what Makes Mixcloud Unique?


Mixcloud's unique licensing agreements with music rights holders make it a legal platform for DJs and music producers to share their mixes without fear of copyright infringement. DJs are free to upload content without any concerns that they’ll be pulled up for copyright infringement. Mixcloud also offers a range of tools and features that allow users to promote their mixes and build their audience on the platform.


Setting Up An Account


First things first, let's walk you through the process of setting up your Mixcloud account and uploading your first mix.


Step 1: Sign Up for a Mixcloud Account

To get started on Mixcloud, you will need to create a free account. Simply go to the Mixcloud homepage and click on the "Sign Up" button in the top right corner. You can sign up by simply using your email address.


Step 2: Set Up Your Profile

Once you have created your account, it's time to set up your profile. Upload a profile picture and banner image that reflects your brand or style, and add a bio that describes who you are and what type of music you play. You can also link your social media accounts to your Mixcloud profile to promote your content. Add as much as you can to set yourself for promotion.


Step 3: Upload Your Mix

To upload your mix, click on the "Upload" button in the top right corner of the Mixcloud homepage. Choose the file you want to upload, and add a title, description, and tags to help users find your mix. You can also choose to make your mix public or private. Mixcloud supports MP3, AAC, M4A, and FLAC file formats. You can also add a tracklist, description, and cover art to your upload.


Step 4: Promote Your Mix

Once your mix is uploaded, it's time to promote it. Share it on your social media channels and website, and encourage your followers to listen and share. You can also use Mixcloud's promotional tools, such as promoting your mix to Mixcloud's homepage or partnering with other DJs and music producers for cross-promotion.


Building Your Mixcloud Audience


Now your profile is set up on Mixcloud, it's time to discuss how to build your audience and grow your following. This is one thing that takes time, effort and hard work. There is no quick win here...


Step 1: Engage with Your Audience

One of the best ways to grow your Mixcloud following is to engage with your audience. Respond to comments on your mixes, participate in Mixcloud groups and communities, and collaborate with other DJs and music producers.


Step 2: Use Mixcloud Analytics

Mixcloud offers a range of analytics tools that allow you to track your listeners and see how your mixes are performing. Here you can find your number of plays, location of listeners and access any comments on your mixes.

The key to building a successful Mixcloud page is to create quality content. Aim to upload new mixes regularly, and make sure each mix is well-produced and showcases your unique style and brand.
